A friend and I got a 99T from the tow company auction a few years ago that wouldn't start. I very quickly traced it to the fuel pump not running, and then found that there was power through the fuse, but it wasn't getting through the rivet to the bottom of the fuse box to sent power to the relay. If I hot wired the output side of the relay off the battery it ran fine. I replaced the fuse box with one in my parts stash. The rivet on the old bax had gotten so hot that it had loosened up, and not clampinging the two pieces it went through together.

John Collins (formerly of Corvallis, now in Jefferson) used to have a source for replacement 99 fuse boxes that had a continuous band from the spade connector on the bottom to the fuse holder on the top, instead of the troublesome riveted pieces. I can try to find out where he got them if you need one.

Everyone talks about how the porcelain fuses corrode. Well, there are two basic problems. The cheapest ones are plastic, not porcelain, and some of them use aluminum instead of brass for the fuse wire. Aluminum in a brass fuse holder corrodes much worse than all brass. (Houses in the early '70s were wired with aluminum because it was cheaper than copper and any fixtures in them _must_ be replaced with special fixtures rated for use with aluminum wire. We aren't putting special aluminum rated fuse boxes in to prevent problems with aluminum fuses.)

The solution to corroding fuses is the GBC group of Buss glass fuses (similar to what American cars used for years, but with tapered ends to fit our fuse holders), available in 5, 8, 16 and 25 amp ratings for various applications (although I've never seen them in the small 25 amp size used in the old Volvos). These are glass fuse holders with the wires soldered to chrome plated end caps. They don't corrode like the porcelain fuses do. Buss fuses can be had at most automotive supply stores, although some amperages might have to be ordered.

BTW, I recently was needing to troubleshoot an electrical circuit and went to NAPA and found an inline fuse holder for new type American fuses and a circuitbreaker that plugs into it. I soldered a couple alligator clips to the ends of the fuse holder wires. Get a 10 or 20 amp breaker and if there is a short in the line it will trip and reset and trip again so you can try to trace where the short is without blowing a bunch of fuses or burning up the wires.
