I don't think that an inch or so of unshielded cable would completely prevent it from working. I have had problems in the past with those wires breaking right at the connector to the distributor which is difficult to fix because I haven't found a replacement for the connector. You could probably rig shielding of the last bit with aluminum foil; it just needs to be grounded, preferable to the shield in the rest of the cable.
It's times like this that I miss Radio Shack where you probably could have bought a short piece of cable for a replacement. I found 2-conductor shielded 22 gauge cable at DigiKey (dot com), PN
A1710-100-ND, but the smallest quantity is 100' for $255.69.
I would disconnect the harness from the ignition module and check that the two wires have continuity between the distributor connector and the module and are not shorted to each other, ground, or other wires. I have several spare modules, but (knock on wood) I don't recall ever having one fail.
I hope that helps!
Best,
Gary
