It's possible that there's a leak at the line pressure regulator in the fuel distributor. I've never had one of those apart, but I suppose it might be possible to source replacement o-rings from McMaster or similar source.

There were two vintages of accumulators, and the later ones ('78 onwards) have a larger capacity. But, they fit in the same bracket and have the same hose connections. There is a Volkswagen part that's the same Bosch part number and is easier to find - I think it's Bosch 0438170014. Bosch 0438170040 is available from FCP Euro, it's listed as fitting VW Scirocco and Audi 5000.
