I've done this mod on my '76 (which also has the 900 spindles/cvs/rotors). The front transmission cover can also come from an '80 + 99 as they have the proper lower ear to fit a 5spd. The first time I put a 5spd into the car I made a mold of a 5spd front cover, stuck the 4spd cover in, and filled the missing piece with JB Weld. This worked but broke when I cartwheeled the car at about 50 mph (which pushed the front cross member into the JB Welded ear). If anyone is junking any 4 speeds or parting any later 99s you should always check for those front covers and save them.
I have the later ('75+ 99 axles in my car). When you put in the tranny you have to make sure you use the smaller inner drivers which have three rings around them (where the hose clamp holds the boot on) instead of 2.
You can use an entire shift mechanism from an '80 - '81 900 5spd car (I think it was a mid year change in '81 or '82 - look for the shift rod that uses the same coupler as a 99 which has two pins instead of a clamp and a pin). If you use the early 5spd shift mechanism all you have to do is drill the rear shift housing mount a little wider so you can kick the rear out towards the driver's side a little bit (about 1/4") so you can get 5th gear. If you don't have those parts available you can use the later parts but the plastic shift guide on the underside of the shifter housing will have to be cut a little so it will fit onto the 99 floor mounts. Some people have said they need to cut the later shafts to get them to fit, but I havn't used one so I can't comment on that.
As for primary drive gears, I use the 30/31 in mine and it is a very quick ratio. I'm usually around 4000 rpm on the highway. I'd recommend using the 31/26 primaries as a start for a street car.
