ignition key springback

When I turned the key to start my car yesterday, I heard a click/snap from the key cylinder. When the key turned all the way to the 'start' position, the car started normally, but the key wouldn't spring back to the 'running' position and the starter motor kept on turning. I can manually turn the key back to the 'running' position and everything operates normally.
So the spring-action has disappeared. What part is this action located in: the key cylinder or the ignition switch? Or something else? I would have assumed ignition switch, except I just put a new one in a month ago and it's been working fine since. Thanks for any help.
