in 73 they came to the states. I've seen copper coral metallic and yellow ones for 73. 73 didn't have the nicer interior...ie. hard foam door panels and nicer upholstery....those two items arrived in 74 and went on to 78. I had a 77EMS which was a 2 door notchback, but I have heard of EMS's being available in a 3 door in 77 and 78. The 3door 78 was only sold in America.
In 73 and 74, EMS stood for Electronic Manual Special...electronic(d-jet) fuel injection, manual transmission, and special goodies like the nicer interior, tachometer, quick steering rack(3.4 turns lock to lock), soccer ball wheels, sportier steering wheel, racing stripes(dealer option), badging, up-graded suspension(bilstein shocks on the later years) and a few other extras I can't remember right now without researching.
The 75 EMS was not a true (E)MS...since the use of mechanical fuel injection was used from 75-78(k-jetronic), so the swedes used a german word for injection(einspritz) to take the place of the electronic in EMS.
Colors available through the years....copper coral metallic, yellow, sunset orange(74 only?),silver crystal poly, sterling silver metallic, black, and burgundy.
Some other countries had 99 EMS's until 1979 and they were available in only two colors...a green(acasia) and an off-white.
In 1976 they came with a front spoiler and a carpeted trunk(which I have in my 73). With the introduction of the turbo in 78 in the states, I guess they figured the EMS's were done, but there were 900 EMS's in 79-80 like Gregg had stated.
In 20 years I have owned a 77EMS(first Saab), a 74EMS(second Saab), my current 73EMS(customized to my specs), and my current project being a 75EMS(one owner car with less than 63k miles on it)
The pic provided shows Doc Jenkin's 74EMS(orange), my viggen blue 73EMS, and my black 75EMS.
