the same paint the car was sprayed with, which is an acrylic urethane. Hard as nails when it cures. A quart of it costs $55....plus add $20 for the hardener needed. I bought a quart yesterday because I still have to respray the engine bay sometime before next years SOC.
The first two wheels I sanded by hand...ugh!!...80 gritted them first, then used the 320 to remove the 80 grit scratches. 320 seemed smooth and shiny enough, so I stopped at that point.
The next two wheels had a much rougher surface, almost like they were sandblasted to white metal. I startd to do them by hand, then said fuggit. I grabbed the Hutchin's DA(I don't know what rpm's it spins at) and went at them with 80 grit first, and they snothed out nice....the 80 did a good job removing almost all of the nicks and scratches. Next I put 320 on the DA to remove the 80 grit scratches, and I was pleased with the results I was getting. Some hard to get areas had still had to be sanded by hand with 320, but it was minimal.
Now that the wheels are sprayed, I might use compound on them to make them even more shiny.....but in all honesty, they look good just the way they are now. It's easy for me to say this, as I already have at least 40 hours into them.....and my fingers are very tired.
