Stephen, it sounds like you have a corosion issue around the cooling jacket on #3. Before you pull the head, check all your valve clearances and timing chain. Those are solid lifters, so there won't be any obvious give unless it is at TDC for each valve during rotation. Expect to need a new head, but maybe get lucky with a gasket and head plaining.
