The water pump in the b engine saabs is difficult to replace and there is a chance that you will brake the drive gears for the pump which will then require you to remove the enigne to replace. You can tell if the water pump is leaking by looking on the left had side of the engine back by the firewall for coolent leaking down the block and on to the ground (assumeing you are losing coolent and not having cooling problems). If you do not see coolent leaking in that area I would doubt there is a water pump problem. If there is coolent then the seals have begun to leak. If the leak is slow and it is not a problem to check the coolent regularly you may want to hold off on replacing the pump, theses pumps can leak some for a long time with no problems. If it is leaking alot the seals will need to be replaced.

There are two options: replace the seals or install and electric water pump.

There are places that will replace the water pump seals but you will want to make sure they know what they are doing and have done them before. If you decied to take on this project you will want to get a hold of a water pump removel tool. Not too long ago someone posted a site that had them for sale, $150 I think. The tool is required to get the pump out and give you the best chance of no problems. I have done it with out the tool before, one failure and two successes and do not recomend it. The other option is an electric water pump which many suggest, do a search for EWP to find out more on that and there is a site which has an install guide, this search will also give you more info on water pump replacement.

Hope this helps you out.

Bruce
