Do you mean that the rod with the shift knob comes out? Does the ball assembly tat it pivots on stay inside the shifter housing? If so, I bet you that the pin that holds the rod in place is broken/missing. That's a super easy fix. Expose the shift housing and unscrew the pivot ball retainer (official name?). There is a hole in the rod and a hole in the pivot ball, and all you have to do is find the appropriate cotter pin to fix the two pieces together. You can even use some wire coat hanger to fix it. Just make sure that you bend the wire arond in such a manner so that the pin doesn't just fall out. Hope this works for you!
