Sounds to me like a bad ballast resistor. It is located under the upper left rear edge of the right front fender, near the fuse box (just in front of the door). There's a single screw, on top of the fender, that holds it in place. The blue wire on the starter feeds bypass power to the downstream side of the resitor with the key in the start position but when the key is released to the running position the power from the ignition switch can't get through the bad resistor. (essentially, you're getting full power to the ignition when starting and reduced power during running. so you get hotter spark when starting.) I _think_ it's the same part as used on the early c900s. I don't find the part number in my Bosch book, but the number is on the part if you remove the screw and pull it out from under the fender.

DO NOT bypass the resistor and run it on full voltage all the time. You'll damage the electronic ignition and coil if you do.
