thanks for the responses guys...
a couple of clarifications/responses:
trying my best to read up on saabs before this purchase, I felt it would be smart to put an extra water pump in the trunk as I understand they are year-dependent and I would like to have an extra correct one with me in case of repair as to avoid damaging the teeth on the shaft. As for finding someone with the tool/knowledge to replace this, that is another problem, but I thought it could only make things easier.
As for the engine rebuild, there will be quite alot of work going into it and while perhaps the quote mentioned is high, the mechanic is highly recommended and on your (saabnet's) list of mechanics. Furthermore, he has a three-year history of working on the car and is competent and honest. My current Volvo/Mercedes mechanic thinks very highly of him. I have probably just not given a decent description of the work involved...
Thanks for the reassurances on my choice here, I will do my best to post pictures when this all comes to fruition. I feel at the very least, if I am not up to the costs of maintainance/restoration down the road, someone (like you folks) will snap it up from me.
So, any other things I should be on the lookout for as potential problems weaknesses of this model? Sound personal maintainance routines?
I was of the (perhaps incorrect) understanding that saabs do not like hot weather that much and/or the #1 cause of death of saabs is thermal death. As mentioned before, I will be driving across country from Oregon to Texas and then be living in Austin from then on...I wish to make the trip safely without undue wear on the car, and have it live happily in it's new southern home.
Relatedly, anyone know of a good saab mechnic in Austin (or nearby) Texas?
oh, one more thing: it is also missing a plastic heating relay(?) so the heater does not work. I understand these are pretty expensive for what they are - I was going to skip it. The current owner used to manually switch it on under the hood when winter hit.
BTW, as to why he is selling instead of doing this himself, he is from a family of saab owners and he currently drives a 87 SPG.
I may consider the 900 axle advice, thanks..
thanks for the info
derek
