My third post this weekend!
I installed my freshly rebuilt B engine into my '80 GLi today but when I started it the oil pressure light and the brake warning light stayed on. I turned it off and pulled the valve cover to find that there was some oil up in there. This pump worked well a month ago when I did a little bench testing on it (drove it manually while pumping oil) and I haven't had a problem with the pressure switch before (the car was last started a few months ago). Both of the lights go out when I unplug the wire to the oil pressure switch regardless of whether the car is running or not (key in the run position when the engine isn't running). I checked the resistance between the battery negative pole and the oil pressure switch. It was 0.006 ohms with the car off and 0.230 ohms with the car running. The resistance increased but didn't go to infinity like I expected it would. Should it?
Right now I'm assuming I have oil pressure and possibly a bad pressure switch, but I don't know why the brake light would go on with the oil pressure light. The engine also seems a little noisy, sort of like valve clatter. A similar noise is why I rebuilt it in the first place but it had been over-revved and had parts of the broken cam carrier in it and when I tore it down I found that the timing chain had been hitting the valve cover.
My only other thought on this is that I remember a problem with 900s that when the starter gear stays engaged, a bunch of the warning lights go on, but that's only when the car is running. When I first tried to start the car my starter was smoking a little bit because it was having a hard time turning the engine over (new tight bearings and assembly oil).
Thanks to anyone with some advice!
