If you want to replace the seals on the input shaft, clean the old one and look on the outer face of it for some numbers. They might be something like 35 x 45 x 10 (that's just an example of what to look for, not the correct numbers). These numbers are the Metric sizes of the inner and outer diameters and the thickness of the seal you need. You'll need a hook type tool to remove the seal, then you have to install the new one without distorting it. Most Metric seal sizes can be purchased from a commercial bearing distributor. (Look in the yellow pages under "Bearings".)

There's also a large seal at the rear of the crankshaft, behind the flywheel, that might be leaking. Try to look behind the flywheel and see if there is oil back there. I thought that the rear main seal on my '78 99 was leaking, but it was dry behind the flywheel. The leak was from the slave cylinder, although that probably isn't your problem.

The output shafts also have seals behind the inner driver cups. It is first necessary to remove the axle (remove the wheel, pull the caliper and hang it up out of the way, unbolt the steering arm from the spindle, unbolt the upper and lower ball joints, loosen the clamp on the inner driver boot, then pull the whole axle out, with the rotor and spindle). Drain the transmission fluid. Remove the six bolts that hold the inner driver/bearing hub to the side of the transmission case, and pull it out (don't loose or damage the shims), then remove the snap-ring from the inner side of the shaft and pull the shaft out of the carrier. The seal can then be removed from the carrier. Reassemble everything in reverse order, cleaning the shims and coating each of them with a thin coating of gasket sealer (I use Permatex #2; I think High Tack spray is a thinned down version of the same stuff and it goes on in an even coat).

WARNING: Only remove one inner driver at a time, as they outer race of the differential bearings are in the hub, and if you remove both of them, the differential and ring gear will fall down inside the transmission, necessitating removing the back cover.

I've done all of this in the car.
