The resistor should have a lead going into one end and the other end going to the coil should have 2 leads, one from the starter to provide a full 12 V while starting and the other to the coil, but the resistor should not be glowing. Glowing would imply a dead short somewhere, but without seeing what you have it is hard to tell.
