John, 99 % of my sending unit experience comes from hotrodding cars, not counting direct replacements. If it were a simple 6v conversion with a Ford or Chevy, It would simply be available. Otherwise I'd go the route I mentioned. Repairing the coil? I'm impressed. I don't know if I'd have the patience for that. Brazing on the mounting plate and duplicating the float arm can be a bit tricky, but really simple. It would be nice if the values were simply marked on the units huh? Good to know about this option...you've got me thinking.
