I'm a fan of the sledge method, but really, to ensure you don't mangle the goods, I use TWO hammers, but not like captain Super99 says. (though I would't disregard his method). I have always been told to put one sledge against the spindle (and yes, have the nut on a few threads...it's silly not to) and then hit the sledge with a second hammer as hard as you'd like. This eliminates off center blows to the spindle that jum the thing up and always works just as well.
That being said, I've had them stick real well and they have taken numerous blows no matter which method I use.
