My co-driver put a 900 dash in his 71 99 that has a 16V motor. He did it mainly so he could swap all of the wiring from a 900 donor car complete with switches and gauges. He kept the original 99 heater system but just adapted the ducts and controls from the 900 to control it. It took him only a couple weekends. The dash looks perfect and only people that are really familiar with saabs notice and do a double take. The fit is perfect and it dosent look out of place at all.
That said I don't see any compelling reason to do it unless you have a similar wiring situation. The 99 dash is pefectly simple and adequate. As for keeping cars original, I'm all for it but these arent vintage Buggattis we are dealing with, we are lucky to even find people that even have enough interest in these cars to keep them running at all. So lets not get down on the poor guy for wanting to put a part from another saab in the thing.
Also, somebody mentioned the suspension changed in 75. This is a common intardweb mistake. The panhard rod and rear spring mounting locations were changed in '74. 74's did have the earlier style brakes but a trip to the autoparts store and couple flare unions will adapter to later stuff just fine. Or just build new lines from scratch is really not that hard. Many larger statured people (such as my friend MONGO) find the 99 more spacious as the lack or sunroof and more upright steering angle allow for some more room. The 99's also have a weight sensing self adjusting seat bottom (when a fat person sits on them the burlap and rubber seat bottom blows out and lowers them to the floor).
Anyway! Just do what ever you can to keep that thing on the road and away from the crusher!
