Numbers matching Posted by DougM [Email] (#211) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DougM) on Sat, 2 Feb 2008 16:57:19 In Reply to: '70's EMS or Wagonback, Bob, Fri, 1 Feb 2008 17:20:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Unless you plan on doing the Pebble Beach concourse, I don't think you need to worry about numbers matching. I'm not so sure those judges could even determine if the correct engine and transmission are in an older 99. You see, there are no data plates that tell what the correct serial numbers should be. The engine and transmissions have serial numbers, but they are so generic, it's impossible to determine if they are correct for the car. Sometimes you can figure out what year the transmission came from, but not always.
I've judged a 99 concourse event at one of the Saab Owners Convention, and I can tell you 100% that numbers matching engines and transmissions are not scrutinized. The cars are just not judged to that degree of originality. All of the judges are volunteers with many many years of ownership, but none of them are perfect. I was given points deductions at the 2002 convention because there was no sound deadening material in the trunk of my 73. Even though most 99's had it, mine did not(and I didn't remove it). If you ever plan to show the car at a SOC, it's important to restore it to originality, or as close as possible. Not all of us can remember what's correct either for that year as the cars changed from year to year, or even in the mniddle of a model year, and there is no hard proof for us to go on, just memory.
