I did a 16V conversion on my '83 900 8 valve about two years ago. I'm using the original 8 valve fuel pump, and the car is running perfectly. I've got a 3bar regulator, and tweaked apc. I did have some issues for a while (total loss of power above 3,000rpm, rough idle) that I thought were linked to the pump, but it turns out it was a bad injector.
Now, the car fires up instantly, and can sustain high rpm for long periods of time. Do you have a Bentley 16V manual? I would check all of the 16V components, including the tps. Check your plugs too. That's how I found my problem - one cylinder was running lean.
