The water pump seals begin to leak. This requires that the pump be pulled and new seals installed. The reason this is a dreaded job is the pump is gear driven. Care must be made during the removal and install to ensure you do not damage the gear teeth. I have done three of the pumps, two had no issues. The one that had a problem did not properly seat when being installed (appeared to be at the time), after a couple days of driving the pump unseated, borke all the teeth off both shafts and the car quickly overheated. This required the engine to be removed to fixed.
