Like Bruce said, seals go bad and leak coolant out the weep hole and down the side of the block, or the teeth strip and the pump stops turning. The later engines, which should include 77's, used a cast iron fine tooth gear which can strip or break alot easier than the older style, thus you need to source the factory puller to remove and install the pump. Even removing the impeller off the shaft is risky, as they like to shatter as well. Also be wary of any shaft available on ebay, as one I installed worked great for a week before it destroyed the teeth on the idler shaft in the engine, requiring an engine swap(since I had a spare block). All I can say is that installing one is very stressful, because you have no idea what's going on with the gear meshing, since you can't see it happening.
