Chris,
I'm guessing one of a few things.
it could be a dirty ground, since the gauges accuracy really depend on ground strength, look at where the ground strap meets the motor/trans, and attaches to the body, check the battery ground for tightness and clealiness...and, you can check the grounding of the gauges themselves, usually they are all strung together, and then grounded to the chassis under the dash, just check for clean tight, connections.
next check the fuses, rotating them does help, but I'd rather clean the connections with a wire brush, and I'd suggest use the glass fuses with stainless ends, over the old ceramic ones.
finally, a long shot based on the alt light coming on....this can happen for a variety of reasons, sometimes the little cicuit board on the back of the alt can crack, and this gives a intermittant problem...sometimes, internally a diode can fail, and this allows the alt to discharge ac instead of dc volatge, the battery still charges ok, but you will eventually damage the battery...also, when the diodes have failed, the battery will drain itself if the car sits for a few days without being run...drive the car over to someone with a battery load meter (any auto parts store, battery/alternator shop) and they can help you...or, with your voltmeter, measure votage (at the battery or anywhere else--cig lighter, etc) you should see almost 14 volts with the car running, that should be on the DC scale...if you see anything on the AC scale, you probably have some alternator trouble...ie the diodes are shot.
