The same thing happened to me once when I didn't get the spring plates put back in correctly, which makes me think those plates are kind of important. (These are the springy, sorta C-shaped pieces that press against the back edge of the pad -- they're bent back into channels at the ends and the cotter pins go through the channels to hold them in place.)
Seems as if they would be the only thing that keeps forward pressure on the pads, so the retaining tabs on the pads press against the calipers and keep the pad from sliding forward.
Without these plates, I'm guessing it would be pretty easy for the pad to get "cocked" in the caliper as a result of the wiping action of the rotor, and then it would be prone to fall forward and drag, just like what happened to you. So my guess is that you need to hunt down a set of these spring plates!
If you find a source of new ones, please post. Also, if I'm wrong about this, somebody please note it here -- my spring plates are getting in pretty doggy condition, and if I can't replace them I'm afraid I'm going to have to eliminate them, and would like to know if there's some way to do without them.
Also, anybody know where to get the cotter pins? Or a workable substitute? No luck finding those either. Mine have gotten so brittle that every time I change pads, a little more breaks off the ends.
