I had the same thing happen on a shift linkage taper pin. Turned out the pin had frozen in place -- probably had never come out in 25 years! -- and pressure of the nut wasn't enough to loosen it. The only solution was to tap it out with a drift.
I was luckier than you -- I didn't strip any threads, so later when it was time to put the pin back in I was able to re-use it and just put the original nut back on the skinny end to keep it in the hole. Has worked fine since.
If you can't get at yours to tap it out, you might try seeing if you can press it out with a C-clamp. Usually if you can get it to budge at all, that will release the taper so you can pull it out with pliers. If you just can't get at it with any kind of tool, your only option may be to remove the whole assembly so it's accessible.
Big nuisance, I know! But at least you TRIED to do it the right way first! And as happens so often on old Saabs, the right way didn't work, and now you've got to improvise... good luck!!!
