Taper pin removal on a 1967 Mod 96 help?

I am in the middle of removing the motor/tranny of my 1967 Mod 96,
and I came to the part where the shifting linkage needs to be
disconnected from the tranny. I put the gear shift in neutral,
and the pin that holds the shift linkage to the tranny has one nut on
the bottom, and the top is threaded, but no nut. I can't see how this
pin comes out, without using a drift to punch it out, and I know
that's not right.
Is this just a early model issue? I don't remember having this
problem with my 1972.
Help?
