I also notice that it requires more time to upshift one gear and engage the next during acceleration when freewheeling is active. Shifting from one gear to the next requires less effort on the lever and less time when the freewheel is not used. Shifting quickly (by loading the lever towards the next gear before depressing the clutch pedal) does allow the accelerating upshift process to go much more easily and quickly with freewheel operating. The process then is as quick as with freewheel locked and not used. I use the clutch for upshifts in both freewheel mode and during the infrequent times I use locked mode.
There are occasions where it has been necessary to release the clutch in neutral (double clutching) to allow the input gears and synchronizers to spin in order to engage a set of gears, most typically at low speeds or when standing such as when slowing for a stop sign or waiting at a red light. I suspect that the input gears have stopped spinning with no torque input from either the engine (clutch not engaged) or from the output gears.
A change of gear oil to a lower viscoscity may help prolong the time the input gears "coast" and ease the low speed selection of first, but so would newer, less worn, sychronizers. I'm coping for now.
