The 750 is a rather nice engine. Not as powerful as the 850, but due to different carb setup (smaller throat) and heavier flywheel it has a sweeter kind of drive around town, especially at low rpms. But alas, only 33 Hp.
The triple carb 850 engine has only 2 Hp more than a single carb engine, and those three carbs can be kind of a pain to get to run right. Often the triple carb engines are highly fuel consuming. That said - if the carbs are in excellent shape the engine is nice enough. 42 Hp - 27% more than a 750.
The bullnose 850 engine is a common replacement in a SAAB93, for many reasons. The main ones being:
* directly compatible with everything. a no-brains conversion that gives you an instant quite noticeable performance gain. 5 Hp more doesn't sound like a lot but it's a 15% gain!
* the cylinder head on the 750 engine only has 8 bolts. thus they are somewhat prone to develop head gasket problems. the 12-bolt 850 head doesn't have this problem at all
* supply. 750 engines are getting kind of scarce, but there are a lot of 850s around.
I don't quite understand your reasoning otherwise. You say the 750 engine needs rebuilt - but another option is to move the crank to another block?? What exactly needs a rebuild then?? The crank is the only moving part in the engine, and the one thing to pay attention to / spend money on in one of these engines!
