Hello Saabers:
Last year while cruising with my 66, A rattling sound began to emit. It got louder like the sound metal braking and rattling... I got out of the car and placed my ear to the front grill...yes the sound was coming from that region... I was only acouple of blocks home.. I thoght to myself..get home fast! Upon accelerating, a final clanking and them the car stalled. Damn, I said, the engine seized! I pushed that car uphill. downhill I never felt so exhausted in my life..my chest heaved my throat abrasively dry.
I did have a spare engine, and while lifitng the engine out a few months later, I noticed metal chunks on the engine bay floor. Right where the motor mount connected to the crankcase was broken..hence the lower crankcase shattered here, thus that rattling sound. I heard that cold day. The engine spun freely, so I said to myself great..just get a lower crankcase from the garage. this is when I realize that the servicebook reads ..do not mix lower crankcase with upper block. I did install the spare engine, yet my old engine was smoother and quieter. What I wish to know now, is if I can simply place on another lower half onto this engine..despite the factory warning.
Second, What could have caused the lower crankcase to shatter there? I wondered if it was a loose motor mount from the vibration? or was there something loose in the engine that found its way down between the case and crank weights(the clearance here is very very small) and burst the lower crankcase for mercy. If so , then it would make sense to tear this engine and inspect bearings.etc.. Just a few moments ago, I took off the broken lower half, and
everything looks good... the engine spins freely!
