There's good reason why SAAB recommended regular oil changes. Every mechanic I knew back in my early 96 ownership said to chagne the oil every 6 months or 6000 miles. The reason has more to do with keeping debris out of the ball bearings. Sure, the debris can cause damage to gears, but the bearings are even more likely to be damaged, and that causes bearing failures that might destroy gears.
If it makes noise and you're getting chunks of debris, park it until you can fix it.
