Valve adjustment is quite straight-forward and takes oh...first time... maybe an hour tops. I can do it in 15 minutes. Tools needed are quite simple- tool to remove spark plugs, socket to remove valve covers, a feeler gauge to measure the valve clearance, and a wrench to adjust the valves. Both the Haynes and Saab manuals are clear on procedure. If you don't have either of those (and you really should have at least a Haynes manual), then I could probably scan in the appropriate pages and email them to you. The procedure involves rotating the crankshaft such that certain valves are moving, and they adjusting other valves. To rotate the engine, its easy when the plugs are out (no compression) and you jack a front wheel put the car in gear and rotate by hand. It sounds complicated. It's not really.

I consider valve adjustment yearly maintenance on my VSaabs. If the valves loosen up, you will hear them tapping away. If they tighten up, you will see a change in performance that is perceptable. In fact, tightening up is the norm if you are running stock heads and using normal unleaded pump gas. What happens over time is that the exhaust valve seats wear away since there is no lead additive in the gas. This lets the valve seat further into the head, removing valve clearance. If driven long enough in this condition, you burn a valve (ask me how I know this).
