John,
One other note- you mentioned that one of the timing gears is stripped. You said you had a Sonett, but I don't know your Vsaab experience level...
The stripped timing gear is the one on the balance shaft. These gears are made of fiber and are a bit of a weak link in the drive train. The cause for failure is actually the balance shaft bearings. These wear over time and can be worn prematurely by a too-tight alternator belt. If you have a prospective V-4 (either in or out of a car), always grab the external balance shaft pulley and see how much play there is in it. If you can move it side-to-side by hand, then your balance shaft bearings are on the way out. If they get too worn, then one day, KER-RUNCH! you strip all the teeth off the balance shaft gear. That most likely means pulling the engine, pulling the pan and cleaning out the stripped teeth, and putting in new bearings and another gear. I say "most likely" because it is POSSIBLE to do that job with the motor in the car...but not recommended. It's possible to remove and replace the bearings without sending the motor out to a machine shop...let me know if you plan to do that and I could send you instructions.
Now you say that you have a spare V-4. Check the balance shaft play by grabbing the pulley as I said above.
One final item- there are steel balance shaft gears that show up from time to time. These were used on air-conditioned cars because there was so much stress from the compressor belt. They were probably a Sport and Rally part as well, but I can't remember for sure. I've got one in each of my three VSaab's, but they're quite scarce. Jack Ashcraft sells a gear that's made of nylon and he claims it's better than the old fiber ones. And don't ever just change the gear- you have to change the worn bearings or you'll soon be changing the gear again!
