"Does anyone else run a stock v4 at that RPM on the road?"
Have done many times, with the roof rack loaded with bicycle and rubber raft, got the speeding ticket to prove it. The engine will stand up fine, the cooling system is the weak point in hot weather, so watch the gauge carefully. Ensure the right thermostat 180F, clean radiator, good belts and hoses.
Cooling systems and their maintenance is not as simple as many thinkle peep. Conventional advice for conventional vehicles is 50-50 coolant and distilled water, drain and flush every two years, to which I add change the thermostat every other time. The V4 is not conventional, was designed where there is no hot weather and runs out of cooling capability in 100F + summer weather like mine.
I recommend a 25/75 coolant/water mix, unless you experience winter temperatures that could freeze that mix. The 50-50 mix is good to -37F; the 25/75 mix is good to +10F which is colder than most places. Higher coolant levels lower freezing point of the mix (up to about 66%, but irrelevant unless you are in Alaska). Flush/exchange this yearly to maintain additive levels of the antifreeze which are depleted in use. Add a bottle of REDLINE WATER WETTER which will improve heat transfer in the cooling sytem.
