Bob,
Doug gave a pretty good explanation from the encyclopedia, but I will add a bit more to it. Like the encyclopedia says, it is the stress cycles that fatigue the metal. So, it is not directly age related. It is indirectly age related because more time usually means more stress cycles.
Here is some of what I remember from a metals class I took. When building with steel, it is possible to design so that the expected stress cycles can continue to infinity, and the part will not fail from fatigue. However, with aluminum, you can only build it to take more stress cycles than you think it will receive in its expected life span. Aluminum can’t be built to withstand infinite stress cycles. That is part of why airliner inspection for early crack detection is occasionally in the news.
It might be worth looking for stress cracks at major component attach points on your car at the same time you inspect for rust. I did have a problem with the steel wheels on my 1970 Saab 99. I lived in an area of curvy roads, it was a high mile car, and I had two wheels fail. Rust later killed the it when I jammed on the breaks to avoid a deer, and tore the right front lower control arm out of the body.
