Transmission jump?

Gentlepeople:
I have been enjoying my V4 96 since valintines day, sorting out some fuel and timing problems with the help of the list. As I apply max torque, uphill in second ocassionally the car will JOLT hard like a bad miss or a broken tooth in the trans. Today it happened and I found the car had put itself into freewheel! I had been meaning to try the freewheel feature so I drove it that way and it performed well. No more JOLT.
I assume there is wear on the gears causing them to ramp up and jump under stress. I have been looking at the archives for info for an hour and decided to go to the source.
Is there an adjustment? Should I lock the selector knob out with a sleeve on the interior of the car? Is it time for a rebuild?
Any help is appreciated as I am digging this car!
Tom
