Eric
I will check the actuater bolt. I'm not sure if the lever gradually moves in untill the torque causes the hard jump, or if the jump itself causes the lever to move. I was thinking of putting a piece of fuel line around the lever's shaft inside the car to limit its travel as a test. If the jump persists internal problems would be indicated. I am afraid of damaging the actuater plate as it is plastic -- or worse?!
My Saab experiance is limited to a 99 I owned back in the 80s. It was a wonderful car except for the gear driven waterpump. That was a nightmare for this shade-tree mechanic. I find that the 96 is fast enough, but not quick enough. 1st gear is quite short so 2nd gets a workout to keep up with traffic. I do drive hard but gently as possible.
The check goes to VSCNA today. The dedication of the Saab owners is one of the reasons I came back into the fold. The 96 is a gas,and will be much better once it is sorted out. It came with a spare Sonett drivetrain but the engine is spewing silicone from every gasket so I don't trust whoever was in there last. Finances are my limiting factor as I blew my wad getting the best car I could.
Thanks again
Tom
