It's also possible the gear inside the bell housing of the transmission is broken... Unscrew the nut for the cable going into the bell housing. You should be able to literally feel the gear inside that drives the speedo cable. If it feels broken (or missing!), you have a fun job of removing the engine, to remove the housing, etc., to replace the gear. Interesting process to say the least! :-)
