I just took my spare trans-axle to MSS and it was toast. Lucky for me my engine ate a piston ring the day I got that bit of bad news. So engine and trans out of car. Second trans to MSS. This one had an unusual jump under hard acceleration. Felt like slipping off of a tooth, then catching again. Unusual in that driving the car in freewheel mode cured it. This is the opposite of what the experts expect.
Watching the disassembly assured me I made the right choice taking it to the experts. Jack pointed things out that I never would have noticed. The special jig and tools he uses would also be hard to duplicate for a shade tree mechanic like myself. He also modifies parts and installs upgrades he has found to work in his race cars making the unit as durable as possible. He also has the parts on hand to replace what is needed.
Sadly, he neuters the freewheel internally as the parts are no longer available. I will miss the silent coast mode but the 96 has enough quirky personality even without it.
As always these projects snowball and it is hard to know where or when to stop. By the time the motor and transmission work is done I will have spent more than the car is worth to a normal person. This is with only minor upgrades to the motor, none of the expensive stuff. But I am not normal and neither is the car! I love the fact that it dose'nt ding, chirp, beeb, call on-star, scroll messages or compute. The driver must be responsible for closing the door, fastening seat belts and turning the wipers on when it rains. We need more LOW-tech. in our lives.
Keeping ya posted.
