Jimmy,
I don’t quite get what you mean. The car has plenty power to do highway speeds and plenty power to merge onto a freeway. Newer cars have more hp, but most of it is unused most of the time.
The taillights aren’t that tiny. It’s not like it’s a 57 Volvo size lights, but, if you are bothered by not enough taillights, it’s cheap and easy to add more. In an attempt to add a bit more safety to my current 96, I did weld 1-1/2 inch schedule 40 steel pipes into the doors so that it would have crash bars like a newer car. That’s a pretty easy job that you could do.
And, like I said earlier, consider taking the 2-lanes for a more relaxed pace. I don’t know where you are or where you are going, but US 50 across Utah and Nevada is a beautiful road with very light traffic. US 36 across Kansas is like having your own personal highway.
Also, take a look at what 900Sman had to say. That’s not ancient history, and he was running the nasty heavily congested Interstates up the east side of the States. I know him, and he would drive that 96 anywhere.
To sum it up, about the only issue to worry about is that if you break down, parts might be harder to get than for a modern car. So, you might want to avoid a trip when you are on a tight deadline. It’s not like there was any Saab parts availability away from the coasts back when Peter and I ran the strokers across country either.
Charley
