I too have a '71 that I drive in the winter. Big storm in the Northeast- left for work this morning and there was probably 3". Been snowing all day. Can't wait for the drive home!
Most likely it's your sending unit in the tank. You can remove it and see if you can clean it up a little, but be careful- the wires are delicate. Of my four VSaabs, two of them have sending unit issues at different spots that I just live with.
Ashcraft sells a replacement kit based on a NAPA sending unit. One drawback is you lose the "low fuel light" feature.
