partially engaged freewheel Posted by toosaab [Email] (#885) [Profile/Gallery] (more from toosaab) on Thu, 5 Jun 2014 15:43:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi all -- Here's the question, would a partially engaged freewheel cause me to lose gears? I was out fishing (didn't catch anything, lost most all the line on the reel, broke the door lock key...) and on my way home I thought I could smell brake fluid/burning brakes and right away fourth gear started slipping real bad. Dropped it into 3rd & the same thing, shifted back into 4th and it was ok. I pulled to a stop sign and no first, no second, I got out of the intersection burning the clutch up with 3rd and then fourth was gone. I pulled over, popped the hood, checked the tranny fluid (petcock) and clutch master fluid levels - good. Then I noticed the freewheel was midway engaged. Pulled it all the way out & started it up, first was kinda there at first and second didn't exist. I was looking forward to a stressed 20 miles home. It was highway until 2 lights within a couple miles of the garage. I started down the road and fourth was fine all the way. I hit the first light at yellow, 3rd was good when I made it through the yellow. The second light was red, stopped and dropped it into first and it was there like nothing happened. Second gear was fine and third and fourth fell into line too. So back to the question, would a partially engaged freewheel cause all the drama with the tranny? I've had the second gear jump in the tranny when the freewheel switch was moving (I've tightened down the spring screw on the top of the nylon freewheel engager thing) but nothing ever like this before in the past couple years. Sorry for the long story, but it's all got me worried/baffled. Thanks again in advance.
