Hello Todd,
In my youth I had a 1967 Saab 95. The steering column was grounded with a wire that was wrapped many times around the column. One end was attached to the column; the other to the chassis.
I now have a 1970 Saab 95. When I got it six months ago, the horn did not work and the steering column was not grounded. No sign of the wire I recalled on the 1967. I solved the problem on my 1970 by adding a short ground wire "around" the "u-joint" near the firewall because I found the shaft coming through the firewall was grounded well enough. The "u-joint" is made with a non-conducting material which breaks the ground path. I don't know how you 72 was officially grounded from the factory.
