I just posted this in the Sonett forum ... I know it is too late for this 13 year old discussion however.
Instrument Gauge Lighting & Bulbs
I was searching for the replacement bulbs for the VDO instrument gauges in my 1974 Sonett. I have learned It is a “T-1 3/4 bulb”.
I had checked many different on-line sources and the major on-line & storefront auto supply shops. I always got incorrect or conflicting information and/or they gave me bulbs that didn’t fit.
I have finally found the correct bulb AND I found it locally. I stopped into Artie’s Auto Parts store in Warren RI and I asked Artie “Do you have any of these?” I pointed to the bulb from my combination meter. He replied “ How many do you want?” It was that simple. He brought me a box of ten and I bought it — after trying them in the connectors that plug into the Combo gauge.
What I got was a Wagner product. it is a “Miniature Lamp” model 74. There is also one other id number on the box 19220.
A “T” type bulb is a miniature Tubular-shaped bulb. The number following the bulb provides the diameter of the bulb in 1/8-inch increments, so a T-1 bulb is one 1/8 in diameter (i.e. 1/8-inch)
The bulb in the Sonett (and 96) are 3/4-inch in length.
The bulb is then referred to as a T-1 3/4 bulb.
The Sonett bulb also has a wedge base or bottom.
You need to know all this to get the right bulb.

#74 bulbs

I paid $0.84 per bulb and bought 10 bulbs.
Bulb Town (see above link) has a #74 bulb for $0.19 each!!
Now to try to find some LED equivalents.
