This board has been pretty quiet. So I thought I would post. I am finally going to solve three chronic problems with my 1968 2-stroke 96! Your advice and experience would be greatly appreciated.
1.The parking brake just won't hold the car even on the mildest incline. I have double checked the adjuster screws and tightened the cables without success. Based on prior posts I am assuming the p-brake levers or the backing plates are worn down after 52 years and just won't provide enough leverage. I have sourced new levers and hope that does the trick.
2. The shift lever disengages when shifting into reverse. I can carefully engage reverse but this is am annoyance. The shifter housing at the steering column is cracked and provides the shifter with more leeway than it needs. Based on previous posts it is either the housing that caused the issue or a failed ball mechanism inside that eventually stressed the housing. I have sourced an intact steering column and will dissect it first before diagnosing the repair.
3. Tom Donney recently rebuilt the engine and it purrs like a Big Cat. However, if the car sits for more than a day or so it wont start unless I pre-prime the carbs. I thought about putting a check valve before the mechanical pump but that doesn't make sense. It seems like the triple carb bowls must be draining dry??? I have no clue on this one so, any advice/experience would be much appreciated.
Again, any advice/experience with these issues would be great. I will provide updates of my progress..
