I have taken apart 96 axles that did not have that ring, they were from a car that was driven a bunch, so maybe not needed? I used a piston pin lock ring on one a few years ago. They are such a PIA to take apart that I usually do not remove the axle shaft from the cv joint. You can Lube up the boots and slide them over the t-handle end. The stop ring is only on a few early axles. Good Luck!
