Hi Juan,
Sorry for the later response...
This lock ring has been the subject of discussion a few times over the years. There are two schools of thought.
1. Some explain that the lock ring was only required during the car build. IE, when the axle assembly was delivered to the car to be installed, it needed the lock ring to hold the assembly together. Once installed, it's not needed, as there's nowhere for anything to move.
2. Saab designed it in- it HAS to be needed or it wouldn't be there. Far be it from me to mess with their excellent design! In fact, Saab made a special tool for the lock ring, so they must have intended it to be reinstalled.
I tend to go with School of Thought #1, as many have not reinstalled the ring and driven the cars thousands of miles with no problem. They say the tool was intended to remove the ring, not reinstall it. I don't recall what the Service Manual says- it's out in barn just now and it's cold...brrrr. Plus, it IS a real pain to put one back no without the tool. I've done it once or twice using picks and small screwdrivers. If I had one apart today, I'd leave it out.
So as my friend Dennis used to say, you pay your money and you take your choice!
