Hi Ethan,
I was going to recommend Tom Donney- he's the MAN! That info is very helpful!
But, I did quickly come across what I was looking for- an article written in the May 1991 issue of NINES- the old Saab Club newsletter. It's by Jack Ashcraft and he gives a step by step process of how to install the sleeve. His dimensions for the sleeve are 1" pipe, approximately 27mm long (not sure why he mixes his measurements...). His article details why he says "approximately". There's some manufacturing variations in the gearbox that may require slight adjustment of the length.
The article is very helpful! I'd be happy to scan it and send it to you- just shoot me an email at ericanet@gmavt.net and put Freewheel or something in the title. Anyone else want a copy, please do the same!
Also, now that you have the gearbox out, you should check the tightness of the shaft nuts. The most common failure mode of the V4 gearbox is that the primary shaft nut loosens and pretty soon, the ring and pinion looses its proper mating depth, then the gearbox goes kerblooey one day! Happy to give you more info on that procedure.
I live on the West Coast of Vermont, near Lake Champlain, about an hour south of Colchester. I do have an official Saab Service sign mounted on my barn, but I don't really have a shop, other than to help people out from time to time.
