I learned there are two seal types. 71 and earlier cars used one with an aluminum lock strip that is T shaped and inserts into a groove in the seal. That type is installed after the seal is placed on the glass and before it is installed in the car. The challenge is to remove the strip without deforming it.
The later type (71 and forward) has a channel on the front side of the seal that accepts a chrome/plastic lock strip which goes in after the windshield is installed and acts like a true lock strip whereas the earlier type is mainily for appearance.
At least that is what I have been told. classicsaabparts.nl has both types of seals and the plastic trim strip at reasonable prices.
