The Sonett (posted here for greater numbers of 93, 95, 96 ) transmission/final drive drain plug was dripping. Yesterday evening I finally got around to addressing the drip. There was a good number of 0.003 in x 0.21 in x 0.43 in (0.75mm x 5.3mm x 11mm) magnetic 'blades' of steel attached to the magnet. Each of the pieces fit the same dimensions except for one. That piece had been folded, pleated, into the same overall size but consisted of three distinct sections that when opened was as if a shearing hadn't been completed. The 'unfolding' of the pleats distinctly shows no "arc" curved shape is present. The implication is that the source isn't the 'disk' shaped shim spacers around various shafts.
There were no fines or whiskers on the plug, just these multiple .2x.4 inch pieces.
A magnet on a string was fished around in the bottom of the case and no other metal was in the region of the magnetic field.
The gear oil had been changed several times following the transmission rebuild part of the car's Lazarus re-animation two years and 14,000 miles ago. There was never any similar collection of ferrous debris during any of those prior drain and fill episodes.
The drained oil was filtered and no other non-ferrous material was collected.
The car had just completed a 300 mile 'Sunday drive' prior to the initiation of the drip remediation. There has been no indication of anything not working just right, or anything being a bit different in the way the gearbox shifts or sounds.
I've spoken with the re-builder of my gearbox and he's as puzzled by this as I am.
I've re-taped the plug (it's not dripping now), re-filled with fresh new gear oil, and have driven another 30-ish miles. I can't discern any difference in the past two days from the past years and months.

At this point I'm more curious than seriously concerned about possible origins for the uniformly sliced and uniformly diced steel 'shim stock' I've collected.

Are there any possible suspects you can think of?
