I have encountered some problems with all of these type of pumps and the main reason for failure of the gears is that both shafts are a casting. If billet shafts could be made with appropriate heat treating of both parts, they would last much longer than the OEM cast parts. I've installed pumps and gone to drive them and found that the layshaft gear was stripped. There also are some very poor quality copies out there of the OEM SAAB pump. The shape of the impeller blades on some of them are crap, too.
